Sanctuary of Oropa

Sanctuary of Oropa

Nestled among the majestic Biella Alps, the Sanctuary of Oropa is one of the most important and evocative pilgrimage places in Italy. Situated at around 1,200 meters above sea level, this impressive religious complex is dedicated to the Black Madonna, a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary which, according to legend, was brought here by Saint Eusebius in the 4th century.

The sanctuary includes several churches, the oldest of which dates back to the 13th century, as well as numerous sacred and historic buildings, including the Monumental Cemetery, the Library and the Treasures Museum, which houses precious religious artefacts and works of art. The heart of the sanctuary is the Ancient Basilica, with its medieval charm, and the majestic Upper Basilica, built in the 19th century.
